Aloha!
A lei is a common symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor or greeting. In essence, it is a symbol of Aloha. In ancient Hawaii, wearing a lei represented wealth, royalty and rank. It is also associated with hula, religion and geography.
A lei is any series of objects strung together with the intent of being worn. Lei are constructed of flowers, leaves, seashells, seeds, nuts, feathers or even bones of various animals.
Back in 1927, poet laureate, Don Blanding gave birth to the idea of Lei Day as he thought that Hawai’l should have a day set aside to celebrate and recognize the custom of giving and receiving lei.
These images and video were taken during the annual Lei Day celebration at the Haleakala Waldorf School, Kula, Maui, featuring my wife, Andrea, who works there, in the Early Education Dept.
I proudly serve on the school’s Board of Trustees.
These Keiki (children) work diligently to create their lei and to learn their hula performances. Each class represents a different island in Hawaii. Please join me next year!
